So: the container has altered global commerce by becoming the core element in a system where the cost of moving goods (and the time it takes to do so) has been drastically and comprehensively reduced. In so doing, the container—both sea and air ones, but mostly those moved by sea—has fashioned a world of unprecedented economic integration in which global actors are free to breakout of the confines of national economies and to trade with the rest of the world. It has also made determining what is legitimate and illegitimate about that trade much more difficult to discover.
